Steer Wrestling

steerc.jpg (11090 bytes)

Steer Wrestling involves two cowboys, two horses, and one horned steer.  The steer wrestler or dogger is set in the box behind the barrier, which give the steer a head start.  The dogger calls for the steer to be released, and then must pause slightly before leaving the box as in the calf roping.  The hazer's job is to keep the steer running in a straight line throught the arena.  This allows the dogger to ride up beside the steer and jump onto its head and horns.  The dogging horse must then accelerate past the steer to clear itself from the dogger and steer.   The cowboy then throws the steer to the ground with all legs pointed in the same direction.  This is when time stops.  Steer wrestlers must be very physically fit to accomplish this daunting task.
